Good evening Castaways, and welcome to this week's IC!
Below you will find five "brain teasers," which are complex problems that must be solved using logic and abstract ways of solving a problem. The object of tonight's challenge is to solve each of the five brain teasers. The first Castaway to correctly solve all five problems will win Immunity and be safe from being voted out at this week's TC. Please post your answers in your Confessionals in a thread entitled "IC #8." You may change your answers after posting them, but I will not tell you if they are correct or incorrect.
This IC is due tomorrow at 1:00 PM. At that time, I will tabulate the results and post them. If a Castaway finishes early, then I will post the results early. If nobody solves all five problems correctly, then the Castaway with the most correct will win Immunity. Therefore, even if you cannot solve all five, submit what you are able to solve correctly. As always, the faster answer will win in the event of a tie. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM any of the hosts or just ask in this thread.
Here are the brain teasers:
1. Beth, Chris, Liz, Michael, and Ryan visited their sisters and brothers at the high-rise dormitory on the State University campus. The top 9 floors of the dorm are for male students, and floors 2 through 8 are for female students. The lobby and the cafeteria are on the first floor. The kids used the elevators and stairs to reach the different rooms. Chris's brother lives on the top floor. Michael, Ryan, and Chris took the elevator to visit Chris's brother's room. Then they went down 5 flights of stairs. They realized they would overshoot their destination, so they took an elevator up 1 floor to get to Ryan's brother's room.
From Ryan's brother's room, the three boys went down 6 flights of stairs to visit Michael's sister. From her room, they took the elevator up 4 floors, where they met Beth and her brother getting on at his floor. Liz and her sister walked up 2 flights from the lobby to get to Liz's sister's room. On what floor does each of the college students live?
2. Grandma lives in Middletown, and her children and grandchildren all live within 30 miles. Sam and his family live 15 miles south of Grandma. Stephanie lives 20 miles north of Brian.
Rachel lives 5 miles south of Sam. Brian lives 10 miles north of Rachel. Cathy lives 15 miles south of Brian. How far does each live from Grandma's house?
3. Mr. Miller's office is on a winding side road next to a highway exit. He was driving on the highway at 60 mph, and at this rate, he expected to arrive at his office at 8:45 AM. However, at 8:30, he was forced to leave the highway and take the side road, driving at a steady speed of 40 mph for the rest of the way. He arrived at his office 15 minutes later than originally planned. How many miles did he drive on the side road?
4. During a recent game weekend, four games were played. In one game, Miss Smith used the spanner but not in the library. In another game, the rope was used in the study but not by Colonel Mucker. During one game, the gun was used in the conservatory, while in another game, Professor Peach was not to be found in the library. Colonel Mucker was never in the conservatory, and Mrs. Waters never used the rope. The lead piping may or may not have been used in the kitchen. Can you determine who used what and where?
5. During a recent music festival, four DJs entered the mixing contest. Each wore a number, either 1, 2, 3, or 4, and their decks were different colors. DJ Sammy came first, and only one DJ wore the same number as the position he finished in. DJ Slammer wore number 1. The DJ who wore number 2 had a red deck and DJ Jammer didn't have a yellow deck. The DJ who came last had a blue deck. DJ Parker beat DJ Slammer. The DJ who wore number 1 had a green deck, and the DJ who came second wore number 3. Can you determine who came where, which number they wore, and the color of their deck?
